British Muslims for Secular Democracy are deeply concerned by Donald Trump retweeting and endorsing Britain First, a far-right, anti-Muslim extremist political party. We strongly condemn the President of the United States endorsing anti-Muslim propaganda created by Britain First.
With the threat of the far right increasing in the UK, Europe and America, minorities are even more vulnerable and susceptible to hate crime and violence. Donald Trump is normalising hatred by endorsing a political party built on anti-Muslim hatred that recently took part in a far right 60,000 strong march in Poland, which called for a ‘White Europe’
We are disappointed to see the President disregard efforts for community cohesion and pluralism by engaging in harmful propaganda. We hope our government will take a stand against this kind of hatred and condemn the President for his abhorrent actions.
Trustee Tanvir Malik Mukhtar comments: ‘It is incredibly disappointing that President Trump seems to have endorsed and equated his domestic policy of ‘America First’ with ‘Britain First’ a racist and extremist UK organisation. We hope for a clarification by the Trump team of this position and the rejection of extremism in every way shape and form.’
Update: We are pleased to see our Prime Minister, Ministers and Parliamentarians stand up to Donald Trump’s irresponsible actions. We are concerned that the President is jeopardising and undermining UK counter-extremism efforts by rebuking Theresa May publicly on Twitter. We implore our government not to host Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK which will send out a strong message to the President that we will not tolerate his divisive, harmful and ignorant rhetoric.
