British Muslims for Secular Democracy are shocked and saddened by the Manchester Arena terrorist attack which has resulted in the loss of 22 lives and numerous injuries. We offer our condolences to the deceased and are thinking of the injured, and all their families.
This is yet another senseless, iniquitous attack against innocent people by terrorists who now operate in many parts of the world. They seek to disrupt nations, panic citizens and destabilise democracy itself. The timing of this attack is significant. It happened during the election.
Whilst facts are still emerging, we would urge everyone to exercise restraint at this challenging time, in particular when engaging in discussions over social media. No excuses or reasons can ever justify such violence. This is the time for national unity and strength. When suicide bombers killed 52 Londoners in 2005, the city and the country found the resolve to stand together and defend our freedoms, democracy and universal human rights. Manchester, another extraordinary British city, is displaying the same courage, purpose and togetherness.
Dr Shaaz Mahboob of the BMSD said “This is a time for all Britons to unite and defend our collective rights. We would urge everyone to remain vigilant and alert the authorities and police of any suspicious activities particularly over social media”.
