British Muslims for Secular Democracy (BMSD) is saddened and shocked to hear of multiple terror attacks, this time in the streets of Barcelona. Our sympathies and condolences are with the victims and their families at this difficult and turbulent time. And with the people of Barcelona and Spain.
The rise of high impact – low-tech Islamist terrorist violence is relatively new. Vehicles are used to indiscriminately plough into crowds at busy markets, events and streets. Whilst this attack happened in Cambrils and Barcelona, the victims are reportedly from multiple nations across the world: from Pakistan, Algeria, Taiwan to Venezuela, Ireland and Greece to name but a few. These indiscriminate violent acts have a devastating impact not only in particular localities, but through all corners of the globe. BMSD condemns their acts and motives.
We must be strong and vigilant in the face of such barbaric and selfish acts of violence that seek to divide our communities and the world. Despite 2017 being a year of great tectonic shifts in geo politics all over the world, it remains our civic duty to promote resilience and solidarity to the victims of all terror attacks and counter the hateful ideologies that motivate the perpetrators.
Rabia Mirza, Director of Media and Engagement said “We at British Muslims for Secular Democracy extend our solidarity to our neighbours in Spain at this difficult and painful time. We hope for a strong and cohesive bond between the communities of Spain despite these attacks and commend the tremendous bravery of the citizens and emergency services that are currently helping the victims in any way that they can”.
